The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) is the most researched and best-known bullying prevention program available today. Backed by more than thirty-five years of research and successful implementation in many different countries, the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is a whole-school program that has been proven to prevent or reduce bullying throughout a school setting.

The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is used at the school, classroom, and individual levels and includes methods to reach out to parents and the community for involvement and support. School administrators, teachers, and other staff are primarily responsible for introducing and implementing the program with the purpose of improving peer relations and making the school a safer and more positive place for students to learn and develop.

School Wide Discipline:
Hawthorne Elementary will utilize a school-wide behavior system that all adult staff members are responsible for upholding. This system incorporates aspects of the Olweus Bullying Program, Safe and Civil Schools Research, Foundations Team, and Time to Teach Methodology. Teaching, modeling, practicing, and re-teaching are vital in successful implementation. Additionally, all adults need to give clear and consistent messages to students regarding their behavior. Students will quickly learn that they will get the same consistent response from the principal, teacher, paraprofessional, or other adult on campus.

Leveled Behavior Rubric - This tool is used to create consistency across school settings ensuring students, staff, and parents are talking about and addressing behavior in a similar way.

Level One Behaviors -  All staff will use Refocus and/or Tickets consistently in all areas of campus, i.e., classroom, playground, hallways, lunchroom, etc. for Level 1 behaviors
The classroom teacher will manage all Level 1 behaviors. The classroom teacher will assign consequences and document behavior using theRefocus/Ticket system. Refocus will be the primary consequence tool used in the classroom.

Level Two/Three BehaviorsAll Level 2/3 behaviors must be reported to the office via the Hawthorne Level 2/3 Behavioral Referral form. Three Tickets or Refocus forms for similar level 1 behavior within a month will signal an automatic level two referral to the office. This constitutes the “chronic level 1 behaviors” area on the leveled behavior chart.Teachers will receive a copy of the completed referral form outlining the consequences given by the principal.
